Pro-Life Legal Group Backs Todd Blanche's Confirmation as Attorney General
Americans United for Life has thrown its support behind Senate confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, telling the Senate Judiciary Committee in a formal letter that his elevation to Attorney General "would advance the cause of respect for human life in the United States." The letter comes as Blanche, President Trump's pick to permanently fill the post left vacant by Pam Bondi, faces a confirmation hearing before the committee this week.
AUL's letter credits Blanche with overseeing the Department of Justice's report on what the group describes as the weaponization of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, a federal law originally meant to protect abortion clinics from violence that pro-life advocates say was turned against peaceful pro-life demonstrators under the previous administration. "Through his statements and actions as Acting Attorney General, Mr. Blanche has shown himself to be a sincere advocate for human life and a faithful servant of President Trump's pro-life agenda," AUL wrote to the committee.
AUL chief executive John Mize urged senators to move quickly. "We urge members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to swiftly advance the nomination of Mr. Blanche," Mize said, calling on the panel to allow him "to continue his service to the nation as Attorney General of the United States." Steven Aden, the group's chief legal officer, pointed to Blanche's handling of the FACE Act as evidence of his commitment to fairness under the law, saying he "has illuminated inequalities in how the law has been applied by previous administrations."
Blanche's confirmation hearing has drawn scrutiny on several fronts unrelated to pro-life policy, but AUL's letter keeps its focus narrow: a Justice Department led by Blanche, the group argues, is one where federal law is no longer used as a cudgel against pro-life Americans exercising their First Amendment rights outside abortion facilities.
