Abortion pills shipped to anyone, no questions asked: House conservatives sound the alarm
Chemical abortion has become the abortion industry's delivery system of choice, and the safeguards around it have all but collapsed. That was the message when the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in the House of Representatives, convened a roundtable on the unchecked spread of mifepristone, the drug at the heart of chemical abortion.
What lawmakers described should alarm every American, regardless of where they stand on abortion. Unregulated websites now ship abortion drugs to virtually anyone who fills out an online form. No verification that the buyer is actually pregnant. No confirmation of how far along the pregnancy is, even though the drug's risks rise sharply with gestational age. No check that the person ordering the pills is even a woman.
That last failure is not hypothetical. Lawmakers pointed to cases in which predatory men obtained abortion drugs and used them against pregnant women without their knowledge or consent, poisoning mother and child alike. A regime with no questions asked is a regime that cannot protect women from the men who would harm them.
Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, a longtime champion of the unborn, noted that 175 members of Congress, including the entire House leadership, have signed a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kennedy urging the administration to act on the abortion pill's safety failures. The message from the People's House could not be clearer: the status quo is indefensible.
The roundtable also lifted up the other side of this story, the side the abortion industry never tells. Pregnancy resource centers across America are serving women with free ultrasounds, material support, parenting classes, and genuine love, surrounding mothers with real options so that no woman ever feels forced into abortion. While the chemical abortion operation asks nothing about the woman, the pro-life movement asks everything: how is she, what does she need, and how can we help.
