America is headed for a demographic dead end, new fertility report warns
The cradles of America are emptying, and a major new report says the consequences are closer than most Americans realize. The Institute for Family Studies has released its 2026 State of Fertility report, and the numbers are stark: the American birth rate has fallen below 1.6 children per woman, far beneath the 2.1 needed simply to sustain the population from one generation to the next.
If current trends hold, the report projects, the population of the United States will peak within a few decades and then begin a sustained decline. Fewer workers supporting more retirees. Shrinking schools and shrinking towns. A nation growing older, smaller, and lonelier with every passing year. The report's own framing calls it a demographic dead end.
